Dirty Banana

It's Thirsty Thursday at Hustle & Shine and featured today is the Dirty Banana. You should know that it's the best drink you will ever have. I may be embellishing just a little, but only because I associate this drink with my husband, our engagement and trips to Martha's Vineyard- all very delightful things.

We first had this drink on a trip to Martha's Vineyard at Nancy's, specifically Donovan's Reef- the deck at Nancy's where you can sit outside and look at the incredible yachts you can't even imagine owning and of course sip on dirty bananas (yes that's plural, times several).

The making of the Dirty Banana is half the deliciousness. It's artfully blended by Donovan (and only ever Donovan) while he sings islandy songs. He always spoons out a tad to taste and make sure it's just right (how do I get this job?) The result- always perfection.

We enjoyed a few celebratory Dirty Bananas the day after we got engaged on the Vineyard (September of 2011). It was the perfect weekend. 

Of course, back on the mainland, we still felt entitled to enjoy the occasional Dirty Banana and evoke memories of trips to Martha's Vineyard. I researched the recipe, and of course it had to be authentically Donovan's.  Luckily I found it here (there's even a video of him in action!) He uses banana liqueur, but I make it without and it's just as delicious.

 

Dirty Banana
1/2 a ripe banana
1 oz Vodka
1 oz Bailey's Irish Cream
1 oz Kahlua, plus a drizzle
Chocolate syrup
2 cups ice

1. Add banana, ice and liqour to blender and blend 10-15 seconds (or until smooth). 

2. Sing an island-themed song
3. Drizzle inside of glass with chocolate syrup
4.  Pour drink in glass, top with a drizzle more of Kahlua, add a straw and enjoy!

...preferably on a hot summer day, but even more preferably on Martha's Vineyard made for you by Donovan.
